Wowcher goes Loco for Coconut Oil

coconut oil

In a world where we’re bombarded with lotions and potions promising to plump our skin, treat our tresses and make us glow, it’s surprising how hard it is to find a product that actually works. Sometimes going back to basics is exactly what we need – after all, mother (Mother Nature that is!) knows best. So with that in mind, we’ve cleared our cluttered cupboards of unused products and pledged to find as many ways to use our newfound holy grail – coconut oil!

The exact same oil you might find in your kitchen for cooking, coconut oil has heaps of beauty benefits sure to give the higher-end products a run for their money. Antifungal, antibacterial and packed with vitamins and minerals, this natural fatty-acid oil can be used to smooth and moisturise skin, add softness and shine to parched hair and can even be used as a makeup remover! We’ll let you in on our top three coconut oil beauty secrets straight from Wowcher Towers…

Coconut oil as a hair treatment

Pre-shampoo treatment

There are tons of expensive hair treatments out there that don’t even seem to absorb, let alone make any noticeable difference. Coconut oil is one of the only oils with molecules small enough to penetrate the hair cuticle, meaning it’s a wonderful way to easily and quickly treat your tresses. Saturating your strands with coconut oil before you wash them is great for promoting soft and shiny hair.

Method: To use coconut oil as a hair treatment, rub the solid oil between your palms to make it melt and apply generously and evenly through your hair. Pop a shower cap on to trap heat and then let the oil soak in for ten to twenty minutes. For best results, place a warm towel around your head as well, as this will really heat things up and help the oil to penetrate further. Shampoo as normal afterwards, and don’t worry about being left with greasy hair – a good ol’ scrub will remove the oil just fine! Not only will you be left with soft, shiny and smooth hair, the treatment will also help to protect your hair against any harsh ingredients in your shampoo. Another top tip for using coconut oil on hair is to rub a little bit onto dry ends to tame frizz. Result!

Body moisturiser

Thanks to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, coconut oil is naturally great for the skin, especially for those with eczema or other dry skin conditions. Our beloved body butter tubs have been collecting dust since we discovered coconut oil. Not only does skin feel amazingly soft, coconut oil keeps skin moisturised throughout the entire day with no need to reapply! Solid at room temperature, the oil melts instantly when applied to the skin making it a breeze to rub in.

Method: Simply massage the oil in after a bath or shower to lock in the goodness and enjoy baby-soft, glowing skin all day. But that’s not oil – you can even use coconut oil as a lip balm or night-time face treatment – just wash it off in the morning with your usual facewash!

Makeup remover

One of the first rules of skincare is that you should never sleep in your makeup! No matter how tired you are or how perfectly you applied your eyeliner that morning, you’ve gotta remove your makeup before bed! Coconut oil is a great way to gently lift makeup, even if it’s waterproof mascara.

Method: Simply apply a pea-sized amount of oil to your skin and gently massage in circular motions – make sure to be gentle around the eye area. Grab a warm, damp face cloth to remove the excess oil and watch how easily the makeup wipes away. You’ll go to bed looking like a dewy sleeping beauty, and any leftover oil on your lashes will only make them even more luscious!

So try it out for yourself and find a new way to get gorgeous. You could free up some bathroom space and save a few pennies by using this multi-use oil as part of your beauty regime. And who knows, you might just go nutty for it like we did.
