London’s Best Pub Quizzes

Us Brits may be well known for our politeness, stiff upper lips and compulsive tea drinking, but we know that nothing sums up the Great British spirit quite like a good old pub quiz. It is that magical time for all nerds to unite and conquer – now is your glorious moment to prove that your encyclopaedic knowledge of that thing no one else seems to give a toss about, was indeed a good use of your time and effort (whilst also being a fantastic excuse for being in the pub at 8 o’ clock on a Tuesday evening).  Be it 80s pop anthems, the names of every king and queen of the 17th century or perhaps, as in my case, the more creepy subjects such as famous serial killers throughout history (so I like reading real-life crime books, sue me), that moment when you look around at your teammates’ befuddled faces, realise they don’t know the answer and get to say the eight finest words in the English language ‘I know this one. Now pass me the pen!’ is a hard one to beat*. And let’s face it: There’s no better way of showing that one know-it-all colleague that no, you’re not right about everything, and yes, I definitely will take that drink you offered to buy everybody if you got the answer wrong. Make mine a couple of pairs of pints.

The problem is, with such a wide array of quizzes out there, how do you even begin to decide which one to try your chances at? Do you go for the best possibility of actually winning a decent prize? Or the theme of the quiz? Or perhaps, after a long hard day at work, just whichever one is closest and requires the minimum amount of effort to get to? Well luckily for you, here at Wowcher have done all the hard work for you, and after many hours of extensive research (it’s a tough job I know, but someone’s got to do it), we’ve found all the best quizzes across London for you to try…

*One word of warning: If you are planning on milking your moment for all its worth, just make sure you don’t do a Bridget Jones and get the answer wrong. Whilst standing up. In a room full of people. (We do however, very much endorse the wearing of gold skin-tight dresses).

The Old Queens Head

Where and when: Islington, Tuesday 7pm
Price: £2

Anyone remember kazoos? You know, those little shrill, brain imploding whistle-type things that was every kid’s favourite (and parents’ least favourite) toy? Well just you wait for all those memories to come flooding back with a spot of kazooeoke, one of the rounds in this full-on nostalgia fest of a quiz. Peppered amongst the more standard question-and-answer rounds are bubble blowing, dance offs and even Styrofoam plane throwing, as well as free drinks giveaways throughout (because we all know that alcohol was the missing secret ingredient from our childhood)…  So why not be brave and give it a bash? I mean, come on, we know we had you at free drinks giveaways.

The Crown and Anchor

Where and when: Brixton, Tuesday 8.30pm
Price: £2
Prizes: 1st place wins a £50 bar tab, but a load of random prizes are given for anything up to seventh place…

A touch of the bizarre is always great, but if you’re after something a little more traditional to cure the Tuesday evening lull, this one will be right up your street. With an amazing selection of craft ales and beers on offer (after all, it really wouldn’t be a Brixton pub without a spot of trendy craft ale), this one is chilled out enough for a weekday pick-me-up, but with a few extra twists included to keep you on your toes. A couple of standout moments include a round where all the answers use up every letter of the alphabet, and for all you Only Connect fans out there, there’s also a round where you can get bonus points for spotting the link between the answers of each question. What’s more, the prizes after third place are pretty random, so there’s always a chance of going home happy.

The Priory Arms

Where and when: Stockwell, Sunday 8pm
Price: £1
Prizes: 1st place wins a bar tab

If the more academic parts of your standard pub quiz aren’t exactly your forte, then this one will be well worth a stab at. The sheer variety of activities involved means that even the token village idiot of your group will have their moment of glory. For the more artsy among you, there’s an arts and crafts challenge round, and the catwalk showdown is finally a great chance to put that one exhibitionist mate to good use. And even if things aren’t quite going your way on the night, there’s still some free beer in it for you with a Family Fortunes style round (with no Vernon Kay in sight, we promise). And if you needed any more convincing, they sell churros. Delicious churros.

The Effra Social

Where and when: Brixton, Tuesday 8pm
Price: £2
Prizes: 1st place gets a cash prize, and boobie prizes for second and second to last place.

From monthly reggae nights, weekly jazz evenings and a whole host of other events jam packed into a month, it’s safe to say that the Effra Social knows a thing or two when it comes to keeping a crowd happy. Once home to the local Conservative club (I’m saying nothing), this place has come a long way from its beginnings, with a massive town-hall style room that has a minimalist and vintage charm. To keep you on your toes, the quiz master skips from your more standard questions to picture puzzles before eventually blasting out music in a guess-the-band type round, to keep the attention of even the most ants-in-your-pantsy amongst you. This legendary pub quiz has people coming from far and wide and is always packed, so it’s best to book in advance if you want to guarantee yourself a spot.

Bogan Bingo

Where and when:  The Slug Fulham, Thursday 8pm and Proud Camden, Friday 8pm
Price: Early Bird £8, Advanced £10, Final Wave £12
Prizes: Pretty much a lucky dip…

Ok, so this one may not technically be a quiz, but it does take place in a pub, and does require at least the smallest amount of concentration (for the first game at least, the second tends to descend into chaos once the bingo fever really hits), so it definitely deserves a place on the list. So much more than just your standard game of bingo, the whole evening involves drinking games, air guitar contests and ‘name that theme tune’ rounds, whilst two men wearing cork hats and tight denim cut-offs blast out an endless stream of classic ’80s rock anthems and do some pretty heavy table top gyration. To top it all off, winners get a lucky dip of prizes, which range from novelty pens right up to a holiday for two, as well as a nice bit of public shaming to help all the losers feel like they’ve had a lucky escape… As you may have guessed, this is not one for the fainthearted – your best bet is to switch off all your inhibitions and just let yourself get swept along with the hysteria. Trust me, you will not regret it.

So there you have it folks! Hopefully there will be a few on this list that you can truly sink your teeth into. All that’s left to do now is get out, get quizzing and practise your victory dance. Good luck!
